Comet 17P Holmes, November 11th, 2007, 2:00 - 3:20 UT. Clear skies with the limiting magnitude around 5.0, seeing 5 - 6 (fair - good).

TMB Optical 105mm f/6.2 refractor on an alt-az mount. Magnification 27x-47x, field of view approximately 2.4 degrees.

The tail that I noted during my last observation of the comet was no longer visible. Instead there was only a slight indication of a tail along the trailing or left had side of the comet which had a hairy or fuzzy appearance to it, except along the bottom portion where it appeared somewhat longer. I was not sure if this was the remnants of the tail that had disconnected or the beginning of a new tail forming. This reminded me of a similar occurrence I noted with Comet Halley between my observations of it on March 22nd, 1986 and April 3rd, 1986 where the tail had disconnected.

The inner coma appeared elongated. A star was visible in the inner coma and two more were visible in the outer coma. No pseudo-nucleus was visible. Outside of the outer coma there appeared to be a faint parabolic hood or envelope visible. It was fainter than the tail. I used different deep-sky filters including a Baader UHC-S filter to helped bring out the fainter detail in the comet.
